Roberta Bondar launched from earth in January 1992 aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery as the first neurologist in space and Canada's first women astronaut.  For more than a decade she headed an international medical research team with NASA, studying the effects of short and long-term space flight on cerebral blood flow in astronauts.
